A conversation with Mojo

I was talking to Mo the other day.  Our conversation was just general stuff about what's going on, church stuff and the like.  I told him about the blog and how it was being received.  I told him about some of the responses I got from people when I told them about the blog.  I explained to him how people would say "Oh!! Yea! I remember Mojo,  Mojo was the man! and the two most said remarks were "tie a knot and keep hanging and  Don't say damn say whoa!!.

One encounter stood out to me. It took place when I was in the Southfield library using the computer.  There was a woman sitting next to me using the computer next to mine.  I politely asked, "Excuse me Miss do you remember the Electrifying Mojo and the Midnight Funk Association"  She said, "Yes, who doesn't".  She went on to tell me about how every time her family gets together for a birthday, holiday or some other special family type event; her brother always insist on playing the old Midnight Funk Association shows he recorded on cassette back in the the 80's and 90's.  I would consider her brother a loyal, commited fan to still be playing CASSETTES of old shows from over 20 to 30 years ago!!  I gave her the blog information and I hope to hear from her brother soon.

Do you remember Kraftwerk, the European Techno music group?  Well, in my conversation with Mojo he told me about a New York Times article written about them in the music section December 2009.  I read it and it gives a shout out to Mojo and how he influenced how people became aware of them in the U.S.

Finally, when it comes to looking up information on the Internet I use Google 100% of the time.  However on Mojo's suggestion I searched Electrifying Mojo and Midnight Funk Association on Bing.  I have to admit I found some information which does not show up on Google.  I don't know why.  Non-the-less as a result of the search, I will have some good stuff in my next post.

Here is the link to the New York Times article. http://www.nytimes.com/2009/12/06/arts/music/06kraftwerk.html

Time to go, "Don't say damn say Whoa!!"

Mojo's Last Radio Appearance

Below is an excerpt from the last time Mojo was on the radio.  Listen to it and see if you can figure out when it happened then post your comment.  It took place on Gerald McBride's regular Saturday Night Live, Old School House Party on 92.3FM.

Also, make sure you complete the surveys, then email me at midnightfunkassociation@gmail.com and leave your email so you can be contacted when and where the MFA party will be.

Welcome Midnight Funkateers

Less than a month ago, I was at home thinking about the past and the good ole days.   I was remembering all the fun times and more importantly the history and paradigm shifts that I witinessed and/or was apart of.

Being almost 60 years old I thought about the personal relationships I still have and how they started.  One of those thoughts was how "Mo" and I became friends. I remember how I was trying to be a DJ while I  was attending U of M in the late 70's.  I was not very good at it but I had one of the best custom built, studio quality dual turntables, amp and speaker setup in Ann Arbor at that time. So, eventually I realized it made more sense for me to lease my equipment than try to drum up business as a DJ!!

Looking back that was a defining moment for me because now I was on course to meet and become friends with one of the most creative, innovative and visionary radio DJ whose work has become legendary.

I met Mojo in 77' when he rented my equipment for a gig he was doing in Ypsi.  The rest is history which spans over 33 years.  I was there when the Mothership first landed!!! I recall the day I came to the office and Mojo said he was contacted by Rolling Stone magazine and they wanted to do an interview and publish it.  I remember going out to Metro Detroit retailers and establishing accounts for MFA muscle T's, MFA baseball shirts and the "Whammy Cloth".  I have fond memories of getting excited over seeing the "numbers" which a radio station uses to determine the rates it would charge for advertising in a particuliar time slot. It was great to see Mojo dominate his time slots to the point where more people were listening to Mojo than Tiger baseball!! Wow, I could just go on and on.
Last Saturday I called Mojo because I found a site which I thought he had put together and I realized after closer examination he did not have anything to do with it.  During our conversation he told me about a number of things that have been done in his name that he had no prior knowledge of.

Mojo being the ever so humble, grateful and always positive person was thankful people think what he did in Detroit radio and the music industry as a whole was worth remembering.  Whoa! its 5:57p and I got to go will continue later.
